On May 16, residents of our valleys gathered at the Rocky Mountain Institute to prepare for Clean Up Day. Armed with orange bags, they fanned out to the roadways in our valleys to gather the debris accumulated over the winter. Hours later they returned to RMI where a lunch was provided by the Snowcap Caucus, and compared stories of unusual items collected.

Prizes were given for the most unusual items. “Barbed Wire” Patty Lecht brought in a truckload of rusted wire found on the Snowmass Creek roadside, making that roadway safe for wildlife. The most outrageous item, found on Watson Divide, was a pair of bicycle shorts that someone mistook for Depends. Everyone agreed that the heroic effort to secure those shorts merited a prize.
