Did you know...

eating fresh at home starts in your grocery store aisle?  Following are some tips suggested by a registered dietician.

For fish:

Buy fish on the day it is delivered if possible.  Simply ask the employees behind the counter of your favorite grocery store when they receive shipments.  Most places get them twice a week.  If the delivery comes Saturday mornings, don't buy your tilapia Friday night.  Ask to see the fish before it is wrapped.  If you can smell it, don't buy it.

For those who buy canned fish, like tuna, it is recommended to buy those packed in oil.  Tuna canned in water has higher mercury content, which is especially bad for pregnant women.  It is not recommended eating the tuna in oil outright.  Open the can and dump contents in a strainer.  Run water over the fish to get rid of excess oil and calories.

For meat:

When buying meat from the refrigerators, look closely at the label.  Prices typically are slashed as it nears the sell-by-date.  But there also should be a tag noting how recently the meat was cut.

For bread:

According to the dietician, the loaf with the highest fiber is the healthiest option.  Then pay close attention to the color of the twist on the bag.  It indicates what day of the week the bread was baked:
* Blue--Monday
* Green-- Tuesday
* Red--Thursday
* White--Friday
* Yellow--Saturday
Bread will keep up to a month upon freezing.
