Gardening - Evaluating and Planning Your Future Garden

August is a good time to evaluate your perennial garden and make notes on what did best and what didn’t do so well.  You can plan to make improvements in the garden in early fall.  Many garden retailers will be putting their plants on sale and you can acquire some good bargains for autumn planting.

Perhaps it is time to dig out older plants for replacement this fall.  Note the perennials that really shined in your garden despite the heavy rains.  Which ones took the least amount of attention?  Make these notations in your journal.

If you have space and want your perennials to naturalize, plan on letting some of them go to seed.  While some gardeners welcome self-sowing of perennials, others do not want to deal with all the tiny seedlings next season.  The choice is yours.  Young seedlings can be dug up and transplanted to more desirable locations or shared with garden friends.

Another benefit for leaving some seed heads is to create a wildlife-friendly garden.  Visiting birds love the seeds.
